"Silvered" coins reflect an interesting transitional moment in the slow but steady decline of the Roman Empire. Essentially, the Romans began to decrease the silver content of their coins...but did not tell the population. Thus, ordinary bronze coins would be "silvered," i.e., covered with a thin layer of pure silver, and then circulated under the guise of being solid silver. The coins we have in our shop highlight that unique moment when all was not as it seemed in the empire.
Second, some of these coins have the impressions of other coins on them, which means that these hoard finds had other coins stuck to them for centuries!
