235-238 AD ROMAN Empire "NGC CH XF" Silver DENARIUS of Emperor MAXIMINUS "THRAX"
Description
This is a professionally certified and graded, silver
"Denarius",
from the ancient Roman Empire. It was struck at Rome in 235 or 236 AD. This was at the beginning of the
"Crisis of the Third Century"
.
It was struck for the Emperor Maximinus I or
"Maximinus Thrax"
as he is known. He managed to rule the
"Roman World"
from 235 until he and his son were murdered by their own troops in the
"Year of the Six Emperors",
238 AD.
Reputedly a huge man, he had been a bodyguard of Septimius Severus. Maximinus came to power when his soldiers revolted and killed the then current Emperor, Severus Alexander, and his mother, who was the real ruler. They had wanted to negotiate with, and buy off, rather than fight, the Germanic invaders. The soldiers would have been denied their expected loot. This ironically ended the
"Severan Dynasty"
. The troops proclaimed Maximinus here Emperor and the reluctant Senate, who considered Maximinus a barbarian because he was a Thracian, confirmed it.

Maximinus turned on the Germans and defeated them. Meanwhile, in Africa, prompted by the Senate, two inept, would be Emperors, rebelled and declared themselves as Gordian I and his son became Gordian II. The Senate switched sides and recognized them. This, naturally, did not go over too well with Maximinus. After defeating the Germans, he got ready to march south.
Then, as often happens, fate took a hand. The local Roman Governor of Carthage in Africa, who happened to control a legion, did not care for the usurpation by the local aristocrats. Gordian II died fighting, Gordian I hung himself and the Senate suddenly had a big problem. They appointed Balbinus & Pupienus, two of their own as Augusti and prepared to meet the oncoming Maximinus.

The end came when the two armies met. The harsh disciplinarian Maximinus, and his son, were killed by their own officers, while sleeping in camp after a meal. The six Emperors of 238:

Gordian II:

A choice, scarcer silver coin from this short-term
