    Description

    Constantinian Dynasty
    Constantine I
had four sons whom he originally designated as Caesars.
    His first wife,
    Minervina
, bore him his eldest son named
    Crispus
. He was made Caesar while his three half-brothers (whose mother was
    Fausta
    ) were very young.
    Constantine
had Crispus killed for reasons that are unclear today, but it is strongly suspected that his second wife, Fausta, had something to do with it so that her sons could move ahead of
    Crispus
into the position of Emperor.  Subsequently,
    Constantine's
    remaining sons,
Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans
, each became a Roman Emperor after disposing of most of the cousins.
This auction is for 7 of the "Campgate" coin type. They are from the Constantinian Period. They are 17-21 mm and weight in at 18.37 gm.
    CAMPGATES
In 4th century Rome, one of the most important responsibilities for the Roman government was to protect the empire from the "hordes of barbarians" that had besieged the Empire for two centuries.  That is why so many of the coins minted in this era depicted a military theme.  The
    "campgate"
coin is one such coin.   The campgate was essentially the entrance to a fortified area and not a part of a transient camp.  They are also known as city gates or watchtowers.  These coins are a great way to add to your collection of coins from Constantine the Great and his family.
    Here are its attributes:
    Ancient Roman,  AE Follis
    OBV:
    Emperor of Caesar
    REV:
PROVIDENTIAE CAESS (or AVGG), campgate with 2 turrets, star above
As usual, the pictures really don't do justice. Let me know if you have questions.
