Description
Imperial Roman CoinAugustus Caesar
- Originally named
Octavian
,
Augustus
is considered to be the first emperor of the Imperial Roman Empire. He reigned from 27 B.C. to 14 A.D. As the adoptive son of
Julius Caesar
,
Augustus' reign initiated an era of peace named
Pax Romana
in which the Mediteranean world remained at peace for more than two centuries. When he died, the Senate made him a god and went so far to rename the month of Sextillis to what we know now as August. His names,
Augustus and Caesar,
were adopted by every subsequent emperor. He was succeeded by his adoptive son (and former son-in-law), Tiberius.
Moneyer Coins
A moneyer is a private person who is officially permitted to mint money.
Moneyers date back to ancient Greece.
They came into prominence during the Roman Republic and then into the Imperial Roman Empire.
The
Roman Mint Magistrates
were responsible for minting all Roman coins leading up to
Caesar Augustus’
reign. At the time of
Augustus
, the name of the person minting the coins' (usually an army general) legend was struck on the coins followed by
III VIR AAA FF
(
Triumviri Monetales
). To become a moneyer, membership in the
VIGINTISEXVIRATE
was the first step on the
CURSVS HONORVM
(the sequential order of public offices held by aspiring politicians). In this way
Augustus
was able to finance his own personal army. Sometime after 12 BC, moneyers ceased to appear on coins for a reason that is lost to history.
AVGVSTVS TRIBVNIC POTEST
translated as the emperor (augustus) holds tribunican power.
As a tribune, the emperor was inviolable (sacrosanctitas) and had the right to veto any act or proposal by any magistrate in Rome.
By combining Augustus with
tribunica potestas
, the emperor was granted a “godlike” nature.
The reverse of the coin also has the letters S and C. This is an abbreviation of
Senatus Consulto
which indicates the coin was struck with the support and decree of the Roman Senate.
