These famous "Last Republican" denarii were struck largely with the help of Cleopatra VII's vast persional fortune, and debased to about 75% fineness to stretch their finances even further. The majority were presumably paid out as payroll to the soldiers in preparation to head off against Octavian's forces, which came to a head at Actium, September 2, 31 BC. Due to the delicate state of the Republic at this point, these denarii were permitted to remain in circulation. Per Gresham's Law, they were usually the first denarii to be spent, and the vast majority were worn flat before they finally fell out of circulation around the time of Marcus Aurelius, when debasement finally caught up to them. These were so popular that they were the final Republican type coin to be restored by Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus in AD 165, nearly 200 years after the fateful battle.
