    Description

In the early days of the Roman empire, base metal coinage consisted primarily of three denominations.
    The
    sestertius
was a large brass coin, the size and shape of which was roughly that of an old style U.S. silver dollar.
    4 sestertii made up one
    denarius
(a small silver coin weighing about 3 grams).
And 100 sestertii made up one
    aureus
(a gold coin weighing roughly 7 grams).
Below the sestertius was the slightly smaller
    depondius
    and
    as
, bronze coins which were about the shape and size of a U.S. half dollar.
In the first century AD, the dupondius had one half the value of a sestertius, and the as carried one half the value of the dupondius.
A counterstamp was occasionally applied to well worn and essentially unidentifiable base metal coins, reducing the value by half, but assuring recipients that the coin was still valid legal tender.
