    Description

    IMPERIAL ROMAN COINS
This auction is for 5 Imperial Roman coins from the late 4th century A.D. of the
    GLORIA ROMANORUM
    type.
    GLORIA ROMANORVM
    This coin is of the
    Gloria Romanorum
    (
    "The Glory of the Romans"
) type.  This legend was first used by Constantine I as a new title of personal honor for himself.
The emperor is saying that he brings The Glory of the Romans to the people of the empire when he defeats barbarians in battle as symbolized by him dragging away the captive shown on the reverse of this coin.
    The emperor is
holding is up a chi-rho emblazoned labarum commemorating Constantine’s victory at the Milvian Bridge in 312 A.D. The Chi-rho symbol continues to be used as the Greek letters for the “Christ”.
Finally, Emperors had been depicted dragging or treading on captives of war for centuries.
The emperor brought Roman military and religious history together in this one coin.
    LABARUM
The labarum was originally a military standard (vexillum) that depicted the Chi-Rho Christogram formed of the first 2 Greek letters in the word “Christ”.
It was first used by Constantine the Great during his victory, in 312 A.D., at the Battle of the Milvan Bridge. Labarum continue to be used as an ecclesiastical banner in religious processions.
    Here are their attributes:
IMPERIAL ROMAN EMPERORS,  AE3/4 (15-18 mm, 9.17 gm total)
    OBV:
Emperor's diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right
