Description
Die Ozeanflieger Chamberline und Levine mit "Spreewald Schönsten" in Kottbus,
German card hailing the June 4-6 1927 record Trans-Atlantic flight from New York to Germany. Just 2 weeks after the Lindbergh's flight from New York to Paris, Clarence Chamberlin and his passenger/"flight commander" Charles Levine flew Wright-Bellanca WB-2
Miss Columbia
from New York to Eisleben, Germany, covering the distance of 3,911 miles in 43 hours, and beating Lindbergh's distance record by 500+ miles.
The fliers' goal was to fly non-stop to Berllin, but flying with a broken compass and no maps (these were somehow lost when the plane went into a tailspin over the Atlantic), they got lost over Germany. This resulted in not one, but two forced landings on June 6 - first in the field near Eisleben, and another in Cottbus, where they decided to spend the night. Next afternoon armed with maps they flew to Berlin, with 14 German planes forming an escort, and a huge enthusiastic crowd awaiting their arrival. The photograph used for this card was taken at the brief ceremony at Cottbus.
NOTE. 1. If you have a few minutes, check out an interesting story about the flight and the events preceding the flight that allowed Lindbergh to "steal" the Orteig Prize - as told by Chamberlin himself - at
