WW1Curtiss OX-5 Aircraft Engine
Cylinder Jug
This water cooled engine cylinder is off of a WW1 era eight cylinder Curtiss OX-5 aircraft engine. The OX-5 is one of the most iconic of all WW1 engines, this engine was used in the famous Jenny biplanes and many other aircraft of the period. After the war many of these were sold as surplus by the United States government where they became popular with car and boat racers.
This jug stands 12 1/2 inches tall, roughly 6 inches in diameter and has a 4 inch bore with eight mounting holes at the base. The original nickel plating is worn and much is worn off on the head and the water jacket has scattered light dings to the surface. I have looked this over and while no expert on OX-5's I think there is a very good chance that this cylinder could be brought back into useable condition. The threads in the spark plug hole are good condition as is the threads on the water port on the side of the jacket. One valve guide is in very poor condition and
definitely
would have to be replaced. The cylinder bore has some light surface oxidation but no scoring or pitting, I cant see anything that I think wouldn't hone out. I will be listing a couple other OX-5 parts so check out my other listings.
Use or display, either way this is a very cool piece of history.
