History
The continents, 200 million years ago, Ocean life is about 2 billion years old, the Alps 100 million, man 4. Petrified or silicified trees date from the Triassic period. They are around 225 million years old.
At the end of the Tertiary era (Pliocene), a dense tropical forest, made up of Dipterocarpus (of the Magnolia family) and of palm trees, covers the Indonesian volcanic chain from Sumatra in Bali, to the west of Java. From time to time, the volcanoes became active. The force of the eruption was such that surrounding forests were uprooted. A thick layer of burning volcanic ash covered them. The nearest trees were consumed, those insufficiently covered rotted away. But those between these two extremes benefited from ideal conditions. They became naturally sterilized by the heat which destroyed bacteria normally found in decay. The silica found in volcanic ash became dissolved in the percolation fluids. It gradually replaced the wood, molecule after molecule, by minerals such as quartz, agate or marble, hence preserving the shape of the trees and even their cells.
Petrified wood (from the Greek root petro meaning "rock" or "stone"; literally "wood turned into stone") is the name given to a special type of fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation. It is the result of a tree or tree-like plants having completely transitioned to stone by the process of permineralization. All the organic materials have been replaced with minerals (mostly a silicate, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the stem tissue. Unlike other types of fossils which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a three-dimensional representation of the original organic material. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment or volcanic ash and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen which inhibits aerobic decomposition. Mineral-laden water flowing through the covering material deposits minerals in the plant's cells; as the plant's lignin and cellulose decay, a stone mold forms in its place. The organic matter needs to become petrified before it decomposes completely.

Mineralogy
Elements such as manganese, iron, and copper in the water/mud during the petrification process give petrified wood a variety of color ranges. Pure quartz crystals are colorless, but when contaminants are added to the process the crystals take on a yellow, red, or other tint.
Following is a list of contaminating elements and related color hues:
carbon – black
cobalt – green/blue
chromium – green/blue
copper – green/blue
iron oxides – red, brown, and yellow
manganese – pink/orange
manganese oxides – blackish/yellow
Petrified wood can preserve the original structure of the stem in all its detail, down to the microscopic level. Structures such as tree rings and the various tissues are often observed features.
On a scale from 1 (Talc) to 10 (diamond) silicified trees, hardness level 7, are situated between granite and precious stones.
Metaphysical

About The Seller
My wife and I became rockhounds over 20 years ago when we realized how much we enjoyed looking for crystals that we could use or display in our home. We are intrigued by the metaphysical properties that have been associated with different kinds of minerals as well as their esthetic beauty and collect-ability. You will find rocks all over in and around our home. We decided to use what we have learned about rocks and combine that with our 30+ years of experience each in the graphic arts (photography and styling) to start selling our specimens here on eBay. We do our very best to portray our specimens as close as possible to how they really look.
Whether you have a passion for rocks, are interested in their metaphysical properties or are looking for a collectable or decorative piece, we have a specimen for you.
Check out all our mineral specimens that we have for sale.
Thanks for looking!
