Description
Rare Marius AntoninianusMarius (269 AD) was a short-lived usurper who ruled in Roman Germany for a few months in 269 AD. He led the plot leading to the murder of Emperor Postumus (260-269 AD) and ruled for a few months in the summer and fall of 269 AD before he was, in turn, murdered by his own troops.
The coins of Marius are all rare and valuable. While this coin has an unfortunate area of corrosion, which has worn away part of the obverse legend, including most of the emperor's name,
it is without a doubt a coin of Marius.
Several things point to this. You can see the pug nose on the bust, a distinct mark of how Marius was depicted on coins. The obverse legend contains the letters M AVR which in only found for Marius. Finally, the reverse design is distinctive for Marius. Under magnification, I think I can faintly make out the MA of the emperor's name, MARIVS.
The coin has a nice patina and good details with a nice bust of Marius.
