Silver Cistophoric Tetradrachm "Cistophorus". 9.79 g. 27mm.
Rome mint for the east (perhaps Ephesus mnit). Struck 98 AD First Year of Reign!
Obverse: Laureate head of Trajan to right, around IMP NERVA CAES TRAI AN AVG GERM P M.
Reverse: TR POT — COS II, six ears of grain tied together by cord looped twice below middle of stalks.
RIC 717 Rated R2 Rarity in RIC (Rare+). RSC 607. RCV 3113. Rare. aVF a few light scratches.
While no decisive evidence exists for the location of the mint of the cistophori during the reigns of Vespasian through Trajan, the style, legends, and, in particular, the consistent die axis--and latest consensus--point to Rome, suggesting that these coins were minted in the capital--rather than Ephesus--and then sent to the East for local use.
