Description
VTG 1950s BUILT by pilot WWII US B25 Bomber model airplane 17” wide 1:48 scale.Geo was a proud WW II Army Air Corp pilot—that’s what they were called before the United States Air Force was formed. Training moved him across country and brought him to Lonnie, who became his bride.
Geo built this model of a B25 Mitchell/Doolittle Raider bomber in the 1950s, long before I was born but likely when he started doing models with young Sonny. Geo was creative like that, in his young life and again in old age.
The detail on this model is both simple and wonderful: the cockpit holds
2 tiny figures, a pilot and co-pilot in molded plastic
flight gear; and the front
nose window
ed section holds a similar
molded plastic gunner figure
with a gun barrel that protrudes through the clear plastic window. The rear has a much smaller clear window; the top has a clear-windowed
rotating turret
with 2 guns and the bottom has an opaque green rotating turret with 2guns; and there are several other small square windows on the plane body. There are a set of
double doors
for the bombs to drop out of the bottom; these are closed and I have not attempted to open them.
While I’m not seeing a maker on the model, it’s clearly old: it’s an
early type of plastic
with a brittle feel, and the entire model—including the wheels--is made of this olive drab Army green color of plastic, except for the windows. Age is also apparent at the glue joins. And on the thin layer of dust I am not going to attempt to remove (I leave that up to a model expert), as this model is easily 65 years old.
The 4 red, white and blue 1”
star decals
on the wings and body are surprisingly bright, as is the
red stripe
on the cockpit. The ¾” letters spelling out
U.S. ARMY
remain dark and clear, as are the ¼” yellow numbers 02344 on the tail. The
dual propellers
span 2-3/4” across and can turn.
This model is in remarkable shape for its age.
I believe it is 1:48 scale, based on what I’ve read about other B25 models.
This built model airplane is 17”across the wings; 14” nose to tail; 3.5” tall at cockpit; 1” high at back; 2.5”tall at the tailpieces.
